Supermarket shopping tips with the rise in living costs!

With the prices of food and general living costs skyrocketing, it can be overwhelming trying to stick with healthy and yummy meals whilst on a budget.
Shopping for groceries shouldn’t be a stressful experience, and it’s important to make purchasing decisions that prioritise nutrition.

Here are some shopping tips on a budget that will help you get the most out of your dollar!

1. Plan out your meals
Doing this helps to prevent aimless wandering around supermarkets that will lead to spontaneous purchases. By knowing what you want and looking for those items, you’ll walk straight past products that might tempt your tastebuds – it’ll also save you time in the supermarket! Whilst shopping with a plan is a great idea, aim to be flexible, don’t feel guilty stopping at the clearance section to see if there are any nice deals for the day.

2. Eat before you shop!
Shopping on an empty stomach can leave you tempted to purchase a high amount of sometimes foods and snacks. When you’re fueled with hunger, it’s very easy to overload your shopping cart as well as your budget. Eat something before you head to the supermarket, and you’ll only buy what you need and came in for.

3. Take advantage of foods about to expire or foods already at home for a quick meal.
As mentioned before, don’t feel guilty grabbing those clearance ingredients or products on sale. They can be a good way to give you different dinner ideas for a great price. In addition, check out what’s in your fridge, freezer, and pantry before you make a trip to the shops. It can save you doubling up on ingredients, or you may even realise you’ve got so much stuff, you don’t even need to make the trip!

4. Consume foods seasonally.
Consuming foods seasonally comes with a whole range of benefits. In season produce is often in high supply and therefore can often be found at much cheaper prices. Produce outside of the seasonal period is often imported which leading to increased prices. Seasonal products allow for a boost in freshness while also supporting local farmers. Ultimately, there’s no losing when it comes to seasonal eating, your tastebuds and wallet will thank you!

5. Substitute expensive ingredients (like meat) with plant-based options.
Meat in the supermarket can be pricey, especially with rising food prices. Substituting these products for plant-based or non-meat items can save you money, and leave you with food items that are less perishable. Products like eggs, beans, and chickpeas are extremely healthy and protein rich foods that can be found at cheap prices, which are perfect meat substitutes. Similarly, utilising frozen vegetables provides an extra-long shelf life, whilst being cheaper and super convenient.
